What you need:

  1. Rattail comb
  2. Scissors
  3. Detangling cream
  4. Spray bottle of water and leave-in conditioner mix
  5. Wide-tooth comb

Step 1: Spray Hair With Water and Leave-in Mix

  1. When taking down braids, slip is required. This facilitates and streamlines for you the takedown process.
  2. Remove one braid and spritz it with the water and leave-in conditioner mixture.
  3. You may choose to add oil to the braid after wetting the hair.
  4. At this time, you should remove any hair cuffs or rings that you have added to your braids.

Step 2: Cut Each Braid

  1. Using a pair of scissors, trim the remaining braid to the length of your hair.
  2. To reduce the chance of cutting off your hair, cut two inches below where your actual hair ends.
  3. You can either remove every braid at once and work in sections, or you can remove one braid at a time.

Step 3: Loosen the Braids

  1. Unravel the braid with the tip of the rattail comb. Start at the bottom and carefully work your way up. Keep in mind that finishing this step takes time and patience.
  2. To make your braids looser, you can also use your fingers if you’d like.
  3. When you get to the base of your hair, pull down the hair extension slowly so you don’t damage your hair.
  4. If you braided your hair using a rubber band technique, remove the rubber band instead by cutting it out with scissors.

Step 4: Detangle the Buildup at the Roots

  1. Dirt accumulating at the roots after wearing a protective style for a while is normal. However, you risk losing some of your recent growth if you are not cautious when detangling the hair at the roots.
  2. Spray the buildup at the roots with the water and leave-in mixture before detangling your hair properly.
  3. Next, massage your preferred detangling cream into the hair’s roots using a small amount. The hair strands will gradually untangle from one another after that.

Step 5: Comb and Twist

  1. Use a wide-tooth comb to comb your hair, then twist it. As you work on the other braids, the twists will help you stretch out your hair and keep it from getting tangled.
  2. For the remaining braids, follow the same procedure.
  3. After finishing, untwist the twists and comb your hair.
  4. A proper shampooing and conditioning routine should be used after.
  5. Style as desired.
