How to Fray Jeans?

Step 1: Try on your jeans and choose the length you want them to be while gazing into a mirror.

Step 2: After marking the location where your jean hem should be with a safety pin or fabric marker, take off your jeans. Put a mark in the middle of the front of your jeans leg. In this instance, I marked the area I wanted to cut with a safety pin.

Step 3: Lay your jeans flat and check that the hems on the front and back are parallel.

Step 4: Using a measuring tape, determine the distance between the bottom hem of the jeans and the mark you made, which will serve as the new bottom hem once the jeans have been cut. I wished to subtract 2.5 in. (6.35 cm) for myself.

Step 5: Make a cut on each side of the leg with the measuring tape while keeping this distance in mind. For the purposes of this illustration, I cut each side 2.5 inches below the original hem.

Step 6: Cut from one side to the other using the cut lines as guides and the measuring tape (move it along the leg as you go to ensure an even cut).

Step 7: Grab a pair of scissors and hold the raw denim hem between the blade and your thumb. Slowly pull the hem through while going the opposite direction of the grain (the direction that the white threads face). It will cause the threads to loosen. Once a few threads have come loose, pull them from the source to the side of the hem.

Step 8: Once you are happy with the amount of fraying, move on to the other side and repeat the process.
